Carlton Trail Valentines Day Loppet

Message from Brad Lefebvre, Carlton Trail Ski Club Executive Member and Loppet Chairman

The Carlton Trail Ski Club is hosting their annual Valentine's Day Loppet this Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Dixon trails. The Loppet is an important fundraiser for the club, so we are hoping as many members, friends, and friends of friends as possible can come out and support the club and, of course, enjoy a great day of skiing, food, and fellowship.

A "loppet" is simply a fun ski. It is not a race of any sort. Skiers pick the distance they want to ski (short, long, in-between), when and how long they want to ski, the trail(s) they want to ski on, how fast they want to ski, and who they want to ski with.

Here are some details:

  • trails will be open to skiers from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (check in between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.)
  • there will be a variety of classic trails (1k, 4k, 9k) which, when combined with a variety of shortcuts, can be mixed and matched to create any distance you want to ski
  • there will likely be one skate trail (4k), depending on conditions
  • trails are through rolling, wooded terrain. Some hills (climbs and downhills) are very challenging. Beginners and less-experienced skiers need to choose their trails carefully (we will be happy to assist with selection and directions)
  • there are four different checkpoints/warm-up shacks amongst the trails (plus the heated clubhouse), all manned, stocked with hot beverages, and equipped with radio communication
  • there will be first aid personnel present and first aid supplies on site
  • $25.00 for adults; $15.00 for seventeen years old and younger; $10.00 for registered Jackrabbit members; $60.00 family rate
  • your registration entitles you to all the skiing you want while the trails are open, an all-you-can-eat homecooked meal, hot and cold beverages at the warm-up shacks, chances at door prizes (some geared to adults, some geared to youth), and our gratitude for supporting our club and our fundraising event. All proceeds are used by the club to make the trails and facilities better
  • a late fee of $5.00 per registration will be charged for each registration received AFTER 12:00 noon on Thurs, Feb. 9
  • the club reserves the right to cancel or alter this event and keep a portion of the fees ($5.00) to cover any costs incurred. Thanks for your understanding
  • the trails map is available on the CTSC website: http://ctsc.sasktelwebsite.net/ (click on the "Check the Revised Map" link and scroll to the bottom). Copies will also be available at the loppet

How to get to the Dixon site from Humboldt:

  • head west on Hwy 5
  • about 8km from Humboldt, turn right (north) on the grid road that is AFTER Dixon Road and just before the Pioneer Inland Terminal (if you benefit from local knowledge, it is the grid that was submerged when the highway flooded, and has been recently rebuilt).
  • go north exactly 6.4km and turn left (west). You will see overhead lines across the road at this turn off, as well as a cross country skier sign (and a paintball sign) in the left ditch.
  • go west about 1.4 km (please slow down). You cannot miss the clubhouse on the right.

How to get to the Dixon site from Saskatoon (and other points west):

  • head east on Hwy 5
  • from the Carmel access road, continue east on Hwy 5 for another 6.5km
  • look for the Pioneer Inland Terminal on your left. Take the first grid road to your left (north) AFTER you have passed the Pioneer Inland Terminal
  • go north exactly 6.4km and turn left (west). You will see overhead lines across the road at this turn off, as well as a cross country skier sign (and a paintball sign) in the left ditch.
  • go west about 1.4 km (please slow down). You cannot miss the clubhouse on the right.

Or if you prefer, there is a road map available on the CTSC website: http://ctsc.sasktelwebsite.net/ (click on the "Check the Revised Map" link)
